Kindly explain what you mean by "red letter" Bibles.I would like to buy an ESV Bible urgently as a gift for a friend who is considering making a decision to be a Christian. Black or burgundy calfskin , not necessarily with a centre column reference if the print will be easier to read, but particularly with the words of Jesus distinct in red as he is keen to learn about what Jesus himself said for a start. Kindly recommend a suitable one please.
Many thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

"Red Letter" means that the words of Christ are in red ink.

1581345984 (Thinline Burgundy Calfskin) is our only premium leather Bible which has the words of Christ in red.

evangelicalbible.com said...

The font size for the single column will be 10.0. I have communicated 9.2 before which is inaccurate.

evangelicalbible.com said...

Dear twins2xdad,

First, I use my Large Print GL Bible 7 days a week and carry it everywhere with me, and it shows no signs of distress.

In regards to Smyth Sewn Binding..and premium leather Bibles...It's difficult for me to compare with other publishers. Cambridge Bibles for example have "calfskin" Bibles ranging from the $70-$250 range.

Another important comment here is that the binding on all Crossway leather Bibles are guaranteed for life. This is a guarantee that Crossway lives up to.

In terms of pricing..Crossway is more expensive in general than other publishers. The reason for this is that they are a tiny publisher compared to Zondervan, Tyndale or Broadman and Holman. Large publishing quantities produce less expensive Bibles.

On the back of an ESV Thinline Trutone Edition Bible box which I recently purchased from this website it reads "Free CD-ROM available with these resources:" and then lists a number of resources supposidly contained within this Free CD-ROM. Does anyone know how one goes about obtaining this free resource?

evangelicalbible.com said...

the free cd-rom is usually ordered by a postcard in the Bible that you ordered. If it was not present you can go here http://www.gnpcb.org/freecd/

Are folk aware that Crossway is publishing a two-column wide margin reference edition of the ESV in mid-March? Page layout is the same as the Classic Reference ESV but with 8.8 pt type (instead of 9.5 pt). Margins are 1.5 inches. Editions include two in hardback and one leather.

Does anyone have the Deluxe Bonded Leather edition? What is the quality? What is the paper like? I must be able to use highlighter and mark in a Bible and I hope it has thicker paper than most nowadays. I hate bleed though of text and paper I can't write on.

Does anyone read Greek or Hebrew? If so, what is the best translation in your opinion?

Jesse

Anonymous said...

Jesse, I read D.A. Carson's commentary on John, which is based on the NIV. Interestingly, everywhere the Dr. Carson disagreed with the NIV, the ESV agreed with him - I know, because I was reading my ESV along with his commentary. I'm not a Greek or Hebrew scholar, but Dr. Carson is.

Are there any plans for a thinline, black letter, center-column reference edition will be published as has been done for many years for the NIV, NKJV, and NASB?

evangelicalbible.com said...

First, in regard to Greek and Hebrew. Perhaps the most literal rendering of those languages is the NASB, followed by the ESV. The NIV is NOT a paraphrase by any means, but it certainly takes liberties for the purpose of clarification. At times these "clarifications" have the potential to be misleading.
Please see examples at www.evangelicalbible.com/why.htm

As to the question of thinline center-column reference Bible-I am not aware of one in the pipeline.

when will the reformation study bible be available in single column?

Anonymous said...

I currently use a Compact TruTone edition of the ESV. I bought this as a "commuter" bible, primarily for use on my daily bus trip. However I really like the translation so I've started using it in more situations. The font is small, but I find it readable. My only complaint is that it is a "red letter" edition - the red does not seem to provide enough contrast given the small font and therefore the words of Christ are somewhat harder to read than the rest of the text.

That said, I am going to start looking for a good primary bible in the ESV. I'm actually considering an RL Allen edition (they use the UK Collins text), but am still considering other options.

My main questions right now have to do with the textual updates that came from the 2005 Translation Oversight Committee meeting. Crossway has been stating the new-to-2007 editions (the single column reference bible for example) will include this revised text. My questions are:

1) Do you know if any existing editions, specifically the Classic Reference Bible, will be available with the revised text anytime soon?

2) Has anyone actually seen a list of revisions so we can see what exactly has bee changed?

Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

Since the new interlinear contains the updated text (as will all Bibles published in 2007) we have studied a few books of the Bible to examine changes. One such book was the book of Romans. We found the changes to be primarily confined to footnotes. One example of a change in text is: "And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness," (Romans 4:5) "Trust" has now been changed to "believe." Trust is now a footnote. Another interesting edit is found in Romans 16:1 with dear Phoebe. "I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant.." Now servant has a footnote which reads or "deaconess."
It should be noted that all translations have standing committees to impliment minor changes. When these translation make minor edits the public is not informed. These are minor edits, not a revision by any means. Our website's "esv search" reflect the most recent edits.

Thanks for the quick reply Paul.

Does that mean that there will be Classic Reference Bibles available this year with the textual updates?

Its not that I think there will be dramatic changes, I just figure it makes sense to get the most up-to-date material the translators have made available (I also understand they added some more translator notes to the preface).

Thanks again!

I am interested in the new English-Greek Interlinear. Can anyone please tell me what the font size is? My eyes are not what they used to be nad I need as large a point-type as I can get.

evangelicalbible.com said...

The font size for the intelinear is 10 point font. It is extremely easy to read, not because of the font size, but because of line spacing and the boldness of the text.

HI, greetings from Idaho...brrr! I am considering the single column reference Bible. Could you help?
The reference columns are located in the center of the book. Is there still enough room to have a little white space?
Also, Between the hard back and tru-tone, which is a better binding? What is true-tone? Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

Dear Blogger,
The Single Column Reference Bible truly has the best layout format of any of the Bibles. The references are in the middle, and are perfectly readable..with space to spare! There is 1 1/8 inch of margin on the sides.
Please read http://www.evangelicalbible.com/recommendation.htm
to learn about what Trutone is. The binding is probably similar in that they are both glue adhesive. All are except the Premium leather edition which is sewn.

Will you be stocking the two-column wide margin reference edition of the ESV due out in April? And will it have the updated text, do you know?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Re: Wide Margin Bible:
Dear David:
I'm not sure whether we will carry this new edition. First, we only market editions we have seen, and thus far there is no link to a page. Second we are extremely wary of font type smaller than 9.5. 10.0 and higher are preferable. Keep in mind that the Single Column Reference Bible has 1 and 1/8 inch margins & 10.0 point font. What do you think? We do not carry the compact versions for the very reason of font type size.

thanks

evangelicalbible.com said...

Dear David,
As to your 2nd question: all new editions will have the updated text.

Anonymous said...

what will it take to get the Reformation Study Bible in single column ESV?

Anonymous said...

I'm looking for an ESV that is WIDE. Not necessarily wide margin, but the bible footprint itself (when both closed, and opened) was wider than most.

I'd estimate that it was atleast 8" wide, and about 9" tall when closed.

ESV, genuine calfskin preferred.

I like the layout of the new side column reference ESV Bible. Will this Bible be made using higher quality paper in the future?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Paper Quality for the Single Column Ref. Bible is 24 Pound. I'm not sure if that will change. Frankly, Crossway is testing this first batch, to see if the format is popular. If it is there will be many more editions in the future...hopefully with better quality paper...though I don't know how big a difference 24 and 27 pound paper are..

Anonymous said...

Re: the Single Column Reference edition. Your recommendations page lists the paper quality at 21 pound not 24. Which is correct?
Thanks

evangelicalbible.com said...

Yes, you are correct. 21 pound paper. Thanks for the correction.

Does anyone know if the ESV is being offered in parallel versions to foreign languages yet? Like ESV/French or ESV/Russian, etc...

Anonymous said...

I am extreemly interested in the single column reference bible but have concerns about the paper thickness. Does anyone have any experience with the 21 pound paper?

evangelicalbible.com said...

In regards to 21 pound paper...Crossway has told us that 21 pound paper was used for this edition because it has many more pages than the other editions. I personally don't know the real difference between 21 pound and 24 pound (Classic Reference Bible)- the thinline comes in 19 pound. I wish I could shed more light on the situation.

Anonymous said...

I love the ESV; however, I really have a problem with the "font" sizes. The supposed 10.0 font seems much smaller than the 10.0 on my Large Print Ultrathin NASB. Why in the world won't Crossway consider producing a reference Bible with larger print so folks without the greatest eyesight can enjoy this wonderful translation?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Regarding font size: This is an excellent question. Actually the deficiency is more than font size; it is format. The new Single Column reference Bible is a grand improvement on previous editions. The Deluxe Reference and Large Print are also adequate.

Anonymous said...

I wish Crossway would come out with an ESV that has a larger font size. I recently received the new Single Column version and the cross references are so small it is a strain to see them...even with my glasses on. While the ESV is my favorite translation, it is disappointing that the text is so small. The NASB Side Column Reference Bible published by Lockman is perfect. It is 11 font and the cross references are so easy to see. Plus, the paper is heavier so you cannot see any bleed through from highlighters or pens. I hope Crossway will follow that example. Help!

evangelicalbible.com said...

Dear Terry,
We at evangelicalbible concur with your general analysis of the situation.

We do have the Deluxe Reference Bible. This (in our opinion) is the best edition to have been published-with 27 pound paper and clear format. The bonded leather is really nice. It is a very sturdy "premium" bonded leather. Problems with text clarity are greater than simply font size. Format, color, paper, font type are all critical factors here.
In sum, your criticisms are corrects.

Anyone know where I can get the Genuine leather Deluxe Reference edition ESV? Why did they discontinue that edition and are they coming out with it again?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Answer regarding the Deluxe Reference Genuine Leather Bible. Thanks for your comment. This edition has been discontinued much to our disapointment I might add. Once the bonded leather and hbk are sold out, this edition will cease to exist. We do still have the premium bonded leather in stock which is currently the best all around Bible available. The premium bonded leather is extremely sturdy and durable and the paper is the best available (27 lb)

Is the SCR Bible available with heavier paper yet? Also, how is the paper weight in the new Wide Margin Reference edition and will you be carrying it? Thanks much!

evangelicalbible.com said...

The SCR Bible does not yet have the heavier paper...we are waiting expectantly.

We would like your opinion regarding the Wide Margin Bible. Has anyone any comments about it. We have not carried it thus far because the font seemed small. Any comments?

Paul

David H. Willis said...

I checked out one today and it was a disappointment. The text was small but not unreadable. I don't understand the wide margin two column approach on this particular Bible as it has virtually no inside margin. I have a Cambridge wide margin (with 2 columns) NIV so I was hoping it would be like mine with wide margins all around the both columns. I can't think of a reason to choose this Bible over the SCR except that it's a little less bulky.

evangelicalbible.com said...

Thanks David for that comment. Font size and readability has been one of the most challenging issues for Crossway.

We would like you to know that the ESV large print Pew Bible is now available.
The Stephen Johnston ESV Audio Bible is available as is the ESV literary Bible.

We are looking forward to reviewing the literary study Bible...Please keep the comments and suggestions coming!

David H. Willis said...

Do all of your Bibles now have the ESV updated text? I have a thinline with the original ESV and I want my next copy to be updated. Thanks much.

David H. Willis said...

A specific edition question:

Does the Classic Reference edition (Trutone/Brown/Cordovan) have the updated text? I'm thinking that might be the edition for me until the SCR gets better paper.

evangelicalbible.com said...

To answer David's question: I am not sure if it the trutone brown has the updated text yet. We are waiting for a shipment.

We have been asked by Crossway to market every edition of the ESV. Thus far we have only marked the ones that meet our criteria for quality. An example is the compact edition. We do not carry it because the font seems microscopic, however, we do get requests. So what do you think: Should we market each version and have a detailed recommendation page, or only market version we feel meet certain quality standards? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

David H. Willis said...

As long as you reserve the right to recommend certain ESV Bibles over others, then I say offer the other product lines that some might want. If you have great eyesight on want a compact Bible then some of these tiny texts bibles might work. I do appreciate your honesty regarding the various ESV Bibles.

Anonymous said...

I agree, offer all editions but provide detailed information. I also appreciate your detailed recommendations. Because of them I have decided to wait for the SCR Bible to be reissued with the heavier paper. That layout is the most readable for me and I don't like print showing through poor quality paper. I trust you will make an announcement when the better quality SCR Bibles are available?

Anonymous said...

On the issue of font size, I have contacted the ESV folks pleading for a larger print reference Bible and have been politely told that it is not in their plans. Here is my issue, do you have any idea why it is so difficult to change font sizes? We do it on our word processors all of the time. I'm sorry for the frustration, but I feel as though we have the best English translation in the world but those of us without the best eyesight can't read it!

evangelicalbible.com said...

In regards to font size.--Frustration warranted. Crossway Bibles has had a real issue with readability. Other Bibles have similar font sizes, but are simply easier to read. Readability is a real issue. There are a few editions which do a fairly good job.
The Large Print editions are very readable.
The Deluxe Reference Bible.
The Single Column Reference is also an improvement-although paper quality is an issue for those of us who like to write in our Bibles..
We agree however that the ESV does not have an excellent "standard" reference Bible. If and when the Single column gets higher quality paper, they will be in the ball park.

evangelicalbible.com said...

we are now offering wide margin, journaling and compact editions. We would greatly appreciate any product information anyone has to share about these versions. We have vastly updated our recommendation page...but we need more feedback.

Dear Customers:
We have been informed by the Publisher (Crossway) that the Classic Reference Bibles will increase substantially beginning 1.1.08. Obviously those prices will be handed down to YOU. Please keep this in mind if you are considering an ESV classic reference Bible.

I recently corresponded with Crossway concerning the upgrading of the paper weight on the SCR bible. I became frustrated when my ink and highlighter ink bled through terribly. It was also disappointing to see the gold edges flake off of the pages so quickly on by SCR. They told me that they had no plans to upgrade the paper. Do you know of any other publishers who may be thinking about publishing an ESV reference bible?

evangelicalbible.com said...

We agree about the issues raised regarding the SCR Bibles. We have mentioned those on our recommendations page. We sincerely believe that Crossway will upgrade the paper quality and readability of all future Bibles. We believe that when current SCR Bibles are depleted they will publish with better paper quality. No other publisher (in the US) has the right to the ESV. Thanks for your comment.

I am an advocate of using more than one Bible. A study Bible, wide margin, personal/hand size and a compact. As much as an issue that large font size is, there are some that have good eyesight and like to use compact Bibles as they are easy to throw in a back pack and be one your way.

I am looking forward to the Personal Reference ESV that is due out in early '08. It is a single column, paragraph format which in my opinion will make a great reading Bible. My wish is that in the future they make this format with a larger font and wide margins.

I wrote a blog about what pens to use for writing in your Bible. I do not recommend using highlighters! For the SCR and thinline, use pigment liners 005 for notes and a nib size no larger than a 003 for underling. Visit my blog for article on pens

I have heard that Cambridge has acquired the rights to publish the ESV and that they plan to release to editions in late '08 or early '09. The first will be a small, compact Bible called Pitt Minion and the other will be in the same double column format with larger font and wide margins which will be the Wide Margin edition. I do not know if they will be anglicized like the ESV's offered by Harper Collins in the UK.

I own a Pitt Minion in the NASB which I really like. Cambridge has a reputation for producing some of the finest Bibles around. Though, the premium leather ESV's from Crossway are not lacking in my book. If it is true that Cambridge will produce these hopefully evangelicalbible.com will carry them!

In regards to the Cambridge-ESV Bibles, I too have heard this from Mark Bertrand in the UK. Because this is still an 08-09 project Cambridge has not confirmed with us.

In regards to the updated ESV Text. All new editions have the updated text and all existing editions will contain it as stock is replaced. Most all Bibles now have the updated text.

I think and it is only me thinking out loud. But, God will let us have his words in a way at this time in life, we can (being raised on the King J.V.or no version) I think that the words are for us, to not know about God and the ones that do know God can read again! It's not a book seres, it is just an upgrade. God wants us to upgrade to better our lives. I do think that what the bible looks like is a sad way to new people to say " I have a cool bible" I think we forgot what the word in it does more for our lives than what cover or color. I think we have gotten to far from our father, the one that holds us children up in the elevator when we are feel like we can't see or can be crushed. We are made in his image and are working to be a father's and help people up so they can see and not be crushed by other. He is our Father and a good one at that!

csharvill said...

Also, he is a living Father (God) So should be his words....

Not the paper it is done on or the stitching in its outer cover.

This is one of the best upgrades or if you want to see it as a real life bible.

He keeps on living an he want's us to do the same.

evangelicalbible.com said...

In regard to the question about the "pulpit" Bible: Crossway thus far has no plans for one. It has been a question that has been asked often.

What's this discussion about an updated text? When did that happen? I have a Classic Ref. (Cordovan) I bought about 6 months ago...what text will it have, or how can I tell which text it has? Thank you.

evangelicalbible.com said...

In response to the "updated 2007 text."

The ESV translation had "updates" that were made to the text and are printing all new editions with the updates.

The truth of the matter is this: All translations (NIV, NRSV, NASB etc.) have standing translation committees that are constantly making improvements to text. The difference with the ESV is that Crossway has decided to make these changes public.

The changes are minor. The majority of changes are found in footnotes. I have also found that a few former footnotes have been incorporated into the text.

In short, the "update" is a routine process in Bible translation. There is nothing in this update that comes close to a "revision."

As a practical matter, to distinguish the updated text from the former, the updated text has an introduction explaining the translation of YHWH as LORD.

I hope this helps.

Something New Coming from Crossway..

I ask them about a Giant Print Edition for people with bad eyes. A Crossway representative said this...

Thank you for your inquiry and for your interest in the ESV!

We do, indeed, have a Giant Print edition of the ESV coming out. However, it is set to be published in the Fall of 2009, so it will be a while still. We appreciate your desire to continue using the ESV.

Sincerely,

xxxxx
Receptionist/Customer Service Assistant

Great News and those of you who have some pull we need to push them for quality. I provided these suggestion below.

1. Make this special edition with the quality of the Lockman Foundation's NASB Giant Print Edition ie... the print quality of text...the bible paper, etc..
2. Provide some copies of edition, when publish, in a black lettered text edition
3. Use the Black TruTone binding people are raving about in your Single Column Reference Bibles or a good quality bond or genuine leather.
4. Provide two ribbons
5. In a red lettered edition, ensure it is a dark burgundy red, NOT bright red or pink. In fact eye specialist insist that bright reds ar pinkis red are bad for older eyes.
6. Ensure the paper do not have bleed through issues
7. Let this first printing be in a binding color like Navy Blue or a Dark Brown, or Chestnut (Diamond Design).
8. Begin each book of the bible on its own page.

Regarding the ESV Bibles by RL Allan, they are a bit pricey but are a bargain when you consider what you are getting. They take the book block from Collins in the UK then have them custom bound in the finest goatskin available. The block is smythe sewn and then bound in the softest leather. The Bible can be bent over on itself without damage to the spine, the covers are limp and just melt into your hand as you hold it open and it lays flat when reading from a desk.

There are two editions available, one with regular goatskin the other made with Highland goatskin. The Highland goatskin edition also have additional lined pages in the back for your personal notes. The Highland edition is available in black or tan.

There have been some issues regarding the quality of the blocks from Collins used by RL Allan. One of the main issues is a stiff book block but in my last correspondence with Nicholas Gray of RL Allan said that Collins will be using a new printer for their upcoming ESV editions to remedy these issues. The new printing will include the updated ESV text, remember though, these editions have anglicized spelling.

I have pics of both the black and the tan, contact me if you would like pics.

Paul, good luck with the RL Allan ESV's!

Any chance the Wide Margin Reference Bible will be released with a wide "inner margin?" I have a NIV Cambridge wide margin edition and I really enjoy that layout. This ESV is close but no "inner margin" with double columns keeps my from making the purchase.

David H. Willis said...

Hey,

Me again. It looks like Cambridge may doing just what I'm looking for, but it will be several months from now. Do you know anything about the upcoming Cambrige Wide Margin ESV? And will you perhaps carry it?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Hi David,
We will be carrying the Cambridge versions. I have been told 2008...but that leaves a lot of ambiguity.

We are trying to carry every ESV that exists.

The Good News web site has a Personal Size Reference ESV that is supposed to be available at the end of February 08. Will that one be available thru your web site? If so, when will you be taking orders for it? I am looking for a smaller Bible to take with us when we travel but the Compact one, I am afraid, would be too difficult to read.

Thanks,
Dave

We are updating our entire online store, which will be available next week.

We hope Crossway does a good job here!

Hi,

I'm interested in the new Personal Reference Edition to replace my rather battered Outreach edition. I am a bit concerned though that the text could be a bit unreadable; I have found the Outreach version to be fine, but the PRE looks rather small. Does the Trutone black edition lie flat when open, and what thickness is it closed? Is it suitable for underlining?

Many thanks

evangelicalbible.com said...

In response to Will:

The Personal Size Reference is a solid Bible.

It is both compact AND readable.
It is flexible and will lie flat on a table. Underlining is possible, but this edition isn't designed for extensive note taking.

thanks

Thanks Paul, that's a great help

Since you sold out of the tan Allan ESVs so quickly I am considering buying a black one. What does everyone think, are these Bibles worth the price? Does anyone who bought one care to comment?

Paul, has there been any feedback from your customers, good or bad?

Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

In regards to the Allan ESV. We have not had any feedback (good or bad) from our customers, however, we cherish the feedback.

We have found them to be the best made Bibles available, in terms of workmanship, attention to detail and binding.

We would appreciate comments about these Bibles as well.

thanks

I like the layout of your new online store. It is nice to see all available products at a glance on the left hand column.

I do have a suggestion. It would be convenient to have a link to the recommendations page from within the store. It would also be nice to have more detail on each item page. Since not all Bibles in the Classic Reference line (for example) have the same specifications, it would be helpful to see on each item page if the Bible is smyth sewn, the paper weight, etc. As it is now you have to navigate back to the recommendations page which can be quite tedious, and those details are important to some customers.

Thank you for all your improvements!

evangelicalbible.com said...

Thanks for the comments regarding the website.
We are going to take all comments seriously. I personally like the reocommendations.

David H. Willis said...

I can't find the paper weight for the personal reference edition at your website. Do you have that info?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Hi David,
The personal size ref. has 21.3 lb paper. This is heavier than the thinline versions.

I currently purchased an ESV Bible because it claims to be more literal than the NIV but found that though in some/most cases it was, it still came short in a few critical sections. The following one is the one I consider most notable:

Mark 7:20

ESV
since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?"( Thus he declared all foods clean.)

KJV
Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

In this case the KJV is accurate, considering that in the original Greek the phrase ("Thus he declared") is not even present.
A clear case of adding one's own interpretation to the scriptures.

Do you have a sample page available for the Compact edition?

Thanks,
Dave

evangelicalbible.com said...

Hi:
Good Question re. the compact edition. There is no sample page available. We have notified the publisher about this.
It should be known that it is very small. With 20-20 vision you will have to make an effort to read it.

Regarding the Allan ESV2, how does the cover compare to the ESV1 in flexibility, quality etc. The Allan site calls this "grained goatskin," so how does the grain compare as well? Does the lack of a leather lining make a difference in this one?

Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

The ESV 2 also has as Goatskin shell. The "feeling" of the leather is that of a Cambridge Calfskin Bible-in other words not a supple as the "Highland Goatskin." Another distinguishing feature is the "semi yapp" leather. This is the leather which protrudes to protect the pages. Since the ESV2 is more compact (doesn't have the 32 line pages) the leather protrudes further than the ESV 1. In short, the ESV2 is more compact, less supple, and has a more distinguished semi-yapp covering.
It is another remarkable piece of Allan craftsmanship.

Do you know if Crossway is planning to publish a large print version of the recently released ESV Study Bible? I can imagine that it would be a massive volume, but very much appreciated for "older" eyes. Thank you.

Is there a quality bound ESV with 9-10 pt font that is TEXT ONLY in paragraph format? I find the cross-references, center columns and little letters amongst the text very distracting.
Thanks.

Humble Friar, take a look at the two Thinline calfskin editions. Note that the Cordovan is red letter & Black is black letter.

I am answering my own question and posting it for those who are interested. The question was, will Crossway publish an ESV Study Bible, large print edition? A Customer Service rep. at Crossway advised me today that she just inquired on the same issue. She stated that the response she got was that the challenge is to publish a larger print Bible without it being to massive in size. They haven't quite figured that out yet. She also implied that they want to see if there is a large demand for such a production. So, currently there aren't any plans to publish the Study Bible with a larger font size.

I am looking for a sewn, calfskin thinline ESV in black that does not have a semi-yapp cover.

So, in light of that, I have two questions:
Are the Crossway calfskin thinline bibles sewn or glued?

and, does Allan make a calfskin or goatskin ESV thinline that does not have the semi-yapp feature?

Thanks so much.

evangelicalbible.com said...

All of Crossway's Premium Bibles are sewn. Allan doesn't make a thinline Bible. The Crossway calfskin thinlines are excellent Bibles.

Clayton Willis said...

Thanks! That helps a lot.

I recently purchased the ESV Study Bible and while Bible text is itself fairly readable I find that the study notes are very small and very hard to read, especially for older readers whose eyes aren't that great of which I am one. The shaded areas of the notes are especially hard to read.

Hi Allan enthesiasts -

I received my Tan ESV1 in Oct - its great and I love it - but I've noticed some separation between the 1st and 2nd sections at Genesis 31 and 32. Anyone else notice that problem? If so, is it something to worry about?

Peace - Mike Coleman

Have you any word on the delivery of the Cambridge wide margin Bibles yet? Also, will you be carrying the brown bonded leather edition; if so, how much will it be?
Thanks!

Biker Bob said...

Gertrude, I also have the ESV Study Bible and agree with your comments about the difficulty reading the notes due to small font size. I think I will just have to get some kind of a magnifier to place over that part of the page.

Could someone please tell me how the ESV version came into being, and the sources it comes from, also the difference between the ESV1 and ESV2.
Thank you,
moed

Anonymous said...

To moed, for answers to your questions about ESV translation sources and philosophy, check out www.esv.org. Regarding the ESV1 and ESV2, if you mean the various Allan's Bible editions, the ESV1 is bound in their premium highland goatskin; the ESV2 is bound in a more stiff medium grained goatskin. The ESV text is the same in both editions.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone been disappointed in the ESV1? How is the anglicized text. is a distraction?

Looking to purchase one very soon and having a hard time deciding...it is alot of money. Debating on the RL Allen ESV1, Crossway Calfskin or the ESV Wide Margin Cambridge. The Cambridge is a pretty big bible, probably a chore to carry around but the quality I have heard is superb.

Comments welcomed.

Mike,

I have the Calfskin ESV Study Bible and except for the size it's great. I have a Cambridge Pitt Minion in goatskin and it is great also. I'm sure the Cambridge Wide Margin in goatskin would be very nice too. I also have the Allan ESV1BR and it is outstanding, love everything about it. The Bibles I have from Crossway, Cambridge and Allan have all the right features for me; they lay flat, have soft, strong, flexible covers, are Smyth sewn and seem to be made to a very high standard and should last a very long time with proper care. With that being said, I'm looking for a wide margin ESV Bible and it has been said that Allan is working on one. Even though there are other premium wide margin Bibles available I'm going to wait for Allan to offer one. Hope this helps.

Grace and peace to you,

Scott

Anonymous said...

Scott,

thanks for the reply..greatly appreciated. I don't think I can hold out till the fall for the new RL Allan ESV. One more question, do you find your ESV1 to small to read and study? I am sure it is larger than the Pitt Minions, just don't know if it is comfortable to read.

I would like the Wider ESV, but that can't be easy to lug around, unless I can talk my wife into letting me have one for study at home and the other for carrying around! That some like a great idea!! need to convince my wife first! :)

Mike

Anonymous said...

Hey Mike,

The ESV1 is very easy on the eyes. That was one thing I wasn't very concerned about when I purchsased the Allan because my ESV Study Bible uses a 9pt font and the Allan is a 9.5pt(the Pitt minion is 7pt I believe) and I find the Study Bible easy to read also. But the Collins text block that Allan uses is bold and dark and just a pleasure to read. There is some bleed through but it doesn't distract me. When using my Allan I have never given the Anglicized text a thought. It is not a distraction at all to me. I couldn't be happier with my Allan. My dad also purchased an Allan ESV. When it arrived just as perfect as mine had I knew then that Allan would be my first choice when looking for a Bible from here on out. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Scott

Hi,

I'm planning to buy an ESV study bible but can't decide whether to go for the 'Tru-Tone' or 'genuine leather' cover. (Unfortunately I can't stretch to the full-blown calfskin option.)

I want this bible to be an investment so I am concerned that the cover should wear well, which makes me suspicious of the Tru-Tone option. (Intuitively, you'd expect leather to wear better).

However, I have heard bad things about Crossway's 'genuine leather' quality as well, suggesting this may be no better?

I am also concerned with the bible's flexibility and that it will lie flat on the desk. The Tru-Tone should be great in this respect right away whereas the leather will certainly be stiff at first...but will it soften up to feel like the Tru-Tone over time? Will it ever lie flat, no matter which bit of the bible you're reading?

I would appreciate comments from anyone owning (or being knowledgeable about) Crossways leather or Tru-Tone coverings. (I assume the cover materials are the same for all the bibles they make.)

Thanks!
