This blog is a good idea! I look forward to posting my comments when I receive my Allan's ESV, ordered last week from the "final 4".

Just curious, how many of the ESV1s did you sell in such a short time?

Anonymous said...

Hey Paul,

I have ordered bibles through your site and am excited about getting 1 of the new Allan ESV's. My only problem is with the small font. Is there a possibility that Allan would make a Bible with the Deluxe Reference size rather than the Classic? That would be my dream bible!

Jon

evangelicalbible.com said...

Jon,
That is an excellent question. I believe the Deluxe, or something similar, should have been the standard type-set for the classic ESV. I will forward this suggestion along.

Anonymous said...

Hey Paul,

Is it possible to request a special order Bible from RL Allan with the ESV Deluxe Reference format?? I would be willing to get that even at a higher price.

Jon

Anonymous said...

I have an Allan ESV in highland goatskin as well as a deluxe reference ESV in calfskin, and I agree that the deluxe typeset is much nicer and easier to read than the classic. However, there is nothing to match the quality of the Allan Bible. The soft cover and art gilt page edges are simply elegant.

Yes, an Allan ESV in the deluxe format would be great, but I don't think it is up to RL Allan. As I understand it they get their book blocks from Collins in the UK so they can only bind what they can get from Collins. If Collins would publish the deluxe ESV, then maybe...!

evangelicalbible.com said...

We have contacted Allan about typface issues. Allan is a very intelligent and practical co. I know they have seen all the typfaces that are available to them. We certainly pressed for the Deluxe Reference format. We believe that should have been the "classic" in the first place.

Anonymous said...

Paul, how did Allan's respond to your comments about typeface issues?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Here is Allan's comments regarding the ESV typeface issue:

"I can tell you that HarperCollins won't do an enlarged reference edition until at least this next updated reprint has settled in and they are confident that the (UK) market would welcome it. Anyway, I have told their Bibles Director that we think there is a market for it with our Allan customers.

Thanx Paul!

This is a comment re. the Allan ESV1 from a customer who wished to remain anonymous.

RL Allan ESV1 black
5 star rating

This Bible is elegant and luxurious without being flashy. I had never handled a cover like this before RL Allan, and nothing compares to the highland goatskin cover. It has a beautiful subtle grain. It is very flexible yet strong, not easily scratched like soft calfskin, and so nice to hold; it almost wraps itself around your hands. It is hard to put down! The art gilt page edging is beautiful, it makes you want to read. This is a binding worthy of God's word, and is well worth the extra cost; it will probably outlast me.

If I want to buy an Allan ESV 1, should I just go ahead and pre-order & checkout in the online store?

Or...? I'm on the mailing list, but I was wondering if there are any specific steps I need to do in order ensure I get one:)

Dear ESV Bible Customers:
The ESV Study Bibleis now available for Preorder.
It is early in the game for a preorder, but Crossway has stated that the first printing is almost depleted. You may want to get your order in now.
Also: for a limited time we are offering free shipping on all of the Study Bibles (except the hardback). The ESV Study Bible is honestly head and shoulders above all Study Bibles which have preceeded it.

I just ordered the ESV1T edition from Allans. Their website description of the Bible says:

(Tan Highland goatskin, semi-yapp style, full leather linings, red under gold page edges, two ribbon markers, with concordance and 32 pages lined writing paper.)

I noticed your description says 3 ribbons instead of 2. Are you certain of that?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Hi James,
Thanks for your comment the ESV 1. The ESV1 (black and tan) will have 3 ribbon markers. This is a change from the first printing. Allan's website simply hasn't been updated with that information.

We will be receiving the new printing "piece-meal." In other words, as they are printed they will ship. We will fill all of our orders in the order they were placed.

thanks
Paul

Well it's now mid August and I'm in much anticipation for my ESV1 to arrive! How's the binding going? Does it still look like they won't be sent out until September/October?

evangelicalbible.com said...

We have posted exactly the word from Allan publishers. We are hoping on the August-September time frame. IF there is a change we will post this on our site.

evangelicalbible.com said...

We are now carrying Cambridge Bibles(ESV, NASB, KJV and NKJV) You can preorder the ESV which is due in October.

.sg said...

You mentioned in August that you were hanging on the Aug/Sept due dates...

Is there any more precise word on shipping now that we're nearing the end of Sept?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Thanks for the question. The Allan ESV1 (Black and Tan) will be shipped next week-sample copies have already arrived. We were informed of this fact this morning.
Here is what we know:
There will be 16 pages of Oxford maps, but there will not be 32 lined pages at the back.
The font is slightly darker than the first edition.
Finally, only 250 copies of each color (Black and Tan) have been printed...so order soon.
thanks

Larry said...

Will there be ANY blank pages or lined pages in the ESV1?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Thanks Larry for that post. As far as we understand there will be no lined pages. As for blank pages I couldn't say. If there are I imagine there would be only a few.

thanks

Anonymous said...

If the bibles will get shipped to you this week from RL Allan, and then you ship them to us after processing, does that mean that the approximate time of arrival is the beginning of October?

evangelicalbible.com said...

In response to Matt's Question: Yes. We should begin to receive the ESV1 next week. They should arrive at your US residences the following week. (First week in October)
Thanks for the clarification.

But i want it now!

Will these esv1's have Anglicized Text?

evangelicalbible.com said...

Yes, All Allan Bibles are "anglicized." Most people can not recognize the difference:
color - colour; theater - theatre.
thanks

Anonymous said...

EVbible: Thanks for answering all of our questions! I'm sure I'm not the only one checking this page as well as Allan's website every day looking for an update! The anticipation now is brutal. (=

Anonymous said...

Just wondering,
I was looking at the photos of other allan bibles on this site and comparing them to your tan and black ESV photos. Why Do some bibles described as "semi yapp" have a slightly bent flap of leather that folds over the book while it seems the Allan ESV seems to be without the slight fold.(it just looks like a regular bible)
For example look at the Allan NIV. It it described as Semi yapp as is the ESV. Will the ESV's semi yapp look like that?
OK time to quit obsessing now.lol
Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

The Allan ESV1 are not the same as most Bibles. There is at least a quarter inch overhand of leather (semi yapp). Most Bibles don't have that. There are variations of yapp length.

thanks

Anonymous said...

What's the latest update? Has EV bible received the bibles from Allan's yet? When's the approx. date of arrival to U.S. residences? thanks!

Hey Everyone. It appears the good folks at Evangelical Bible got some of the Black ESV Bibles in because mine doesn't show up in my account as processing any longer. So, I'm assuming it's on the way.

.sg said...

Not to make anyone feel bad...

But I received mine yesterday and opened it this morning. It's amazing! It feels so nice. The gilding is stunning and semi-yapping is very attractive. The inner lining of black leather (I got the tan version) for some reason is my favorite feature.

Some might say that it's too much to spend in a Bible given all the other priorities of life. There's a point to that. However, I was looking for a Pastoring Bible that I can use for a new lifetime of ministry.

I look forward to it weathering in my hand, as I consider and teach from the word of God.

Anonymous said...

My black ESV order still says "Processing", while I'm reading every day about people who've received their Allan ESV's. Suspense!

Anonymous said...

Dont worry, my order still says processing also. But I know it was shipped on friday and will be here tomorrow. Maybe they don't change the status of the order untill you recieve it?

mashmouth said...

I have orders that were filled months ago the still say "processing". I don't know how much of a good idea it is, however, that I am obsessing so much over this situation. :(

.sg said...

I can completely empathize with the torture of waiting... I placed my original order in May when I graduated.

(Beyond this order) My experience with EVBible has been right on. They seem to be taking care of business. Reading a few posts above seems to suggest that there will be a wait for black Allans. I ordered a single tan.

It's hard - but trust me, it's worth the wait. It's seriously the finest Bible I've ever held. It's almost addicting - which is a good thing for a Bible.

Sorry, if I just made you more impatient.

I just got my tan esv today. Not that it matters but, it was printed and bound in china. ugh.

evangelicalbible.com said...

Dear Allan Bible Enthusiasts:
A few quick notes...
The Allan ESV Tans have been shipped and 75% of the Blacks as well. We received one damaged shipment which we can not send. Finally, as a correction the paper is from China, but the Bible was bound in Britain.

Anonymous said...

Then why does it say on the publishing info page that it was printed and bound in china? It's still beautiful though.

evangelicalbible.com said...

We spoke with Allan about this:
The Bible paper was printed in China, but the Bible bound in London. Reason: a former hardback version was bound in China as well. We apologize for the confusion, but isn't it great to have a Christian publishing co. in China printing Allan Bibles!

Anonymous said...

I am continually impressed with each new Allans edition I purchase.
After my first Allans, a KJV Ruby edition I understood what all the fuss is about. The message contained would be great in any binding but the fine workmanship just pays tribute to the words contained inside. I find myself reading the bible far more as I cannot walk past one without handling the binding and then I am drawn to open it up and read just a little bit more....
I enjoy reading from a variety of translations and have sold off some unused vintage books and collectables simply so I could add other Allans translations to my library. Great pricing and fine service from Evangelical Bibles makes it even easier! While not inexpensive they enrich my enjoyment of the bible so much more.

What's the difference in thickness between the ESV1 and ESV2? Your website says they're both 1 1/4 inches thick, but it looks like the ESV2 is thinner (especially in the photo comparing both) in your photos on Picasa. Thanks.

evangelicalbible.com said...

The ESV1 is slightly thicker because the last edition included the color maps-which are not contained in the ESV2. This may account for the difference in thickness.

thanks for your question.

evangelicalbible.com said...

What does Anglicized Text mean? It means that the English is "British" English. This amounts to virtually the same English that we speak in the US. The only differences we have found are in spelling variation:

A true story......

Last Sunday morning after the morning services, I load the family into the SUV and buckle the my infant son into the car seat. For those with 4 plus infant you can imagine the bags and bibles being loaded.

The road home is aproximately 25 miles down the mountain of which the last 12 is interstate. So I'm driving conservatively some 70 mph. About 1 mile from the exit, I have a couple wave me over pointing to the top of the vehicle.

I pull over get out, and am aghast at what I discover. A brand new Allan Brevier Claraden caught in the luggage rack completely blown into a large ball. Needless to say I'm near to panic and am thinking it is ruined.

Not so. So far from the truth. My wife took it in her hands and straightend each page, then pressed the cover down while I drove the last couple miles home.

By the time I got home, the bible was immaculate, all pages back to their original position (lest wrinkles). The bible suffered no damage whatsoever.

Truly a magnificent piece of workmanship and quality.

Thanks!

Scott Sovereign said...

Can you tell us any more info on the "2 new editions will be out in May-June"?

evangelicalbible.com said...

We probably should have been more discreet here. For certain contractual reasons I can not elaborate in detail.

What we can say is that we will have a completely NEW TYPEFACE that will be the best Classic Reference Bible available. It will be a monumental publication since we will have both the best binding as well as the best type face! Of course we will keep you posted!

The second edition will replace the 2nd tier ESV2- a mid grain version. It is also going to be a stunning publication, not because of an original type face, but because of its binding....

Scott Sovereign said...

Great news on the new typeface! Any chance that they will be upgrading the paper as well (I understand if you aren't allowed to answer)? That would really be something - then you could have straight A's all the way across the board on your Recommendations and Rankings page!

(If that cheer sounds a bit archaic, please keep in mind I am a Traditional Anglican*)

*splintered off from Episcopal Church - we actually believe the Bible as the Word of God and don't have actively sinning clergy - or those that proclaim their sin is ok and done out of love...

Bel_Riose said...

So I got my RL Allan Choc Brown ESV1BR today.

Flipped through and no mistakes anywhere.

Can't believe how soft the cover is! I can open to the first verse of Genesis or last verse in Revelations and it stays flat open.

Read some other blogs and comments regarding the paper. I have to say that the point is taken that you can see text on the opposite side any page. However, I do not find any difficulty with the text as the ink seems to be very high quality, and the page color is a bright white as opposed to the translucent effect most bibles have.
If the paper isn't perfect, it is still a far step ahead of anything I have used. Also, I did my pen tests and while I will most likely make notes with my Fisher Space Pen which is a different type of ballpoint ink, to my surprise my fountain pen (filled with Visconti blue ink) did NOT bleed through.

The ribbons are great - I disagree with any criticism on the length or the color - they're perfect..

If I have any criticism and I do have to reach here - I have seen better maps. The RL Allans are different and have some good information. Pressed though, I would admit that most of the info on other maps isn't really missed most of the time. It certainly doesn't give me any buyers' remorse..

In all, I have to agree with others here that this is really the finest bible I have ever received.

We are currently in partnership with R.L. Allan publishers to produce an Allan ESV Classic Reference Bible. evangelicalbible.com thought it would be important to get as much input as possible regarding the Allan Classic Reference Bible before publication.

Please state clearly what you believe our top 5 priorities should be in designing this Bible:
Below are a few ideas:

margin width, paper quality, highland goatskin, yapp edges, font size, maps, concordance, etc.

Please reply soon since we are literally in the process of deliberation on this new classic ESV Bible.

thanks in advance.
evangelicalbible.com

P.S. We will have the Allan ESV3-Buffalo grain Bible in April/May-the Brown/Mahogany. It will replace the ESV2 as a second tier Allan Bible. The buffalo grain is excellent.

Anonymous said...

Debating on getting the black or brown...never had a brown bible, and never have been a fan of the burgundy...Is the brown completely different?

You mentioned that you are working with RL Allan to come out with there own classic version of the ESV? Is that around the corner and would it be worth the wait if a couple of months out?

Will they offer the ESV in a non Anglicized format?

Anonymous said...

Here are my thoughts on the top five attributes your Classic Reference Bible should have:

1. Quality paper. Nothing else matters if the paper is so thin that it is unreadable. Too many publishers try to save money on paper.

2. Font Size. Again, there are some great small font Bibles, but nothing quality above 9.5pt for the rest of us. Something in the 11-12pt range would be wonderful.

3. Highland goatskin. This is the quality mark of an R.L. Allan binding, I would encourage you to use their best material.

4. Wide Margin. This would be wonderful, even though it would add to the size of the Bible.

5. 3 or 4 ribbons, I find that I'm usually reading in several points at once, and it is useful to have several ribbons.

I hope this helps. Don't be afraid of making a larger Bible, there are some great small and thinline ESVs on the market, and people are likely to use those for travel and other portable needs. There is a market need for a larger, quality Bible, I encourage you to fill that need.

I have no preference regarding a concordance or maps, I use other resources for those materials.

Thanks!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous' comments (added Friday, February 27, 2009 6:24:00 AM) concerning the top five preferences for the soon to be published ESV Bible are ON POINT. Thanks for the list. I just wanted to reiterate the two that are most important to me.

Paper quality. If the paper is see through, I simply cannot read it due to the distracting "ghosting" effect from the previous page.

Font size. This is a huge concern of mine. 9.5 font size is simply too small for a Bible that I intend to use daily.

I cannot wait for the publication, and thanks for soliciting our comments.

1. Trim size that does not far exceed 6x9”. This keeps it in the range of a hand size bible with the a similar feel to the ESV1. I personally would sacrifice margin space for trim size.
2. Font size: 10-11 points. Any larger and one may as well get the large print. I would rec. bold font like the NIV bold reference. In my opinion the Bold Reference is the best reference bible I have ever seen…combining font size and trim size.
Thicker is better! Almost everyone I know does not mind a thick bible as long as it provides good reading. I would rather have a bible that is over 2” thick and under 6x9” than vice versa.
3. Thicker paper: 27-29 pounds. The old deluxe version from crossway had great paper! Bleed through causes focusing problems for the eyes and tired eyes require larger font. While I think “opaque” paper is important, I think that the thickness is the key issue. I have seen lots of bibles with nice opaque paper but if it is thin then it will not matter.
3 ribbon markers
4. Margins 1” or under
Maps, concordance, etc.
5. ALL the traditional Allan touches: red under gold pages…highland goatskin…

Anonymous said...

I agree with the above comments. The top concerns for me are:

1. Top quality heavy opaque paper
2. A larger bold font

These must go hand in hand. I agree the NIV bold print edition was superb, but the paper could have been heavier. I would like to see a typeset like that in a larger font.

3. Wider margins would also be nice.

If this means a much larger/thicker Bible, so be it. There are plenty of hand sized editions out there.

Everything Allan does with their best bindings is first quality. I would be hard pressed to suggest any changes there.

I was one of the lucky ones to snatch one of the ESV1s with the "minor defect" that were on sale for about an hour, and it has become by far my favorite Bible. I'm very happy with it, but my "Dream Allan ESV" would use the text block of Crossway's Wide Margin Reference Edition (although the Deluxe Reference Edition would be a suitable alternative), with the following features (in order of importance for me):
1. Highland goatskin
2. Art-gilt page edges
3. Lined pages in the back
4. Full yapp
5. 3 navy blue ribbon markers the length of the current ESV1
The closer this new Allan ESV comes to this description, the more seriously I'd consider purchasing it.
On a different note, on the chance that someone in cyberspace with influence happens to read this post, what I would REALLY LOVE is a Spanish translation Allan bible, preferebly the 1960 revision of the Reina Valera, with the features I've listed. I hope someone's listening! :)

Top 5 Priorities for a new Classic Reference Bible:

1. Single column, paragraphed format.
2. Wide margins (about an inch is fine...doesn't have to be too wide).
3. I'd like to see the 32 pgs of lined paper brought back.
4. Black letter.
5. No book introductions.

Anonymous said...

Suggestions for the upcoming Allan ESV Reference:

1. Use a blown up font of Crossway's ESV Personal Size Reference text block (single column, paragraphed).
2. Add 1" - 1.4" margins, or so.
3. Add art-gilt edges.
4. Add gilt line.
5. Semi-yapp
6. Thicker Bible is better than larger L X W dimensions.
7. 3 Ribbon markers in either Navy Blue, Green (like the one used on the ESV1-BR), or Dark Crimson Red.
8. Match head/tail bands with the ribbons.

Anonymous said...

My Top 5 Suggestions for the Allan ESV Reference Bible

1) Opaque paper.
2) 8.5" x 5.5" x as thick as needed. Quarter-inch margins. (I'll use a notebook).
3) Legible font. Start with 10 pt and make trade studies with boldness, kerning, and +/- 0.5 pt to minimize the book thickness while maintaining legibility.
4) Art-gilt edges.
5) Three burgundy ribbons.

As a prototype, have a look at a 1989 edition of The New Scofield Study Bible NKJV, Thomas Nelson Publishers. It is legible, has no distracting ghosting, and is 8.5" x 5.5" x 1.25". Remove all the Scofield footnotes and my guess is that it would come in at or under an inch thick.

Anonymous said...

For an "Ultimate" Reference Bible I would recommend:
1. Two columns but with wider columns and narrower reference column than the current ESV1 typeface. The Pitt Minion and Long-Primer, though both very different in size, have a more readable ratio of text column to reference column. The Long-Primer's size is about right too.
2. Full Yapp--to really set it apart from the rest of the pack
3. Both Black and Brown highland goatskin
4. 3 ribbons
5. Lined paper
6. No book intros but each new book starts on a fresh page
7. ESV daily reading plans in the back

And for the next development (and honestly something I would be more interested in)...A "Readers" ESV from Allan with.
1. Single Column paragraph style, hand size (like the personal reference)
2. No references
3. Use all the unique and more casual leathers--cowhide, buffalo, tans
4. And if they are really risky move the verse numbers to the inside like with the Message

If Allan did something like these two you'd find a lot of us Allan junkies buying both (in addition to the ESV1 we already have!).

I sent an email to R.L. Allan the other day asking if they'd consider a full yapp ESV Highland goatskin Bible in the future. I also commented that I'm asking/suggesting this based on the easy to read font size and the full yapp of their Longprimer KJV (I've been coveting the Longprimer Bible as of late).
Nicholas Gray at R.L. Allan informed replied to me with some interesting info:
"We are going to introduce a new larger size ESV later this year to be called the Readers Edition". Nicholas also commented: "The font size will be 10.5pt rather than the normal 9.5pt and the page size will be 9 x 6 1/4 inches."
They might consider full yapp for this edition but don't hold your breath.

I want the ESV Thineline in Black Calfskin, but am concerned if what you have is the 2007 text edition. Please let me know if this is so

2. at least 3/4 in. to 1 inch margin.
3. at least a 10pt. bold font...bold please...why can allan print a KJV in bold and cambridge? WHy not the ESV?
4. Offer a red-letter/and an all blk. font edition
5. color maps, come on folks?
6. full yapp in 4 colors:brown/blk/tan/natural

Is there a place I can go to see a PDF of what the pages look like in the ESV1 from Allan?

If you have a classic reference ESV, it's exactly the same typeface and layout, except some of the words have Anglicized spelling and the cross references are listed straight from top to bottom, so that when they don't fill the entire column, there is a space at the bottom instead of in the middle(which I think looks better, btw). If you don't have a classic reference, you can find a pdf at http://www.crossway.org/home/esv/.
